Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago arrested like a Chicken thief

Kampala Lord Mayor, Mr Erias Lukwago and several opposition MPs have been arrested by police at the Nakivubo Park Yard market, in Kampala, where they had gone to address city vendors.

Mr Lukwago was arrested together with Rubaga North MP, Moses Kasibante, Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munyagwa and Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana, and several KCCA councillors. The opposition politicians had gone to the Park Yard market to address vendors who were protesting against an order to have them evicted.

The Lord Mayor’s arrest comes just a day after the minister in charge of Kampala, Ms Beti Kamya, wrote a letter ordering the vendors to vacate Park yard on grounds that the land belongs to Nakivubo Stadium and that government has plans to develop it.

Earlier, on February 8, Beti Kamya had written to the KCCA executive director, Jennifer Musisi, requesting for the eviction of the vendors from the Nakivubo Park Yard.

Kamya said she was responding to a letter received a letter from the Board of Trustees of the Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium asking her to instruct the vendors to vacate the illegal market in the stadium’s park yard.
