Makerere University lecturers bitter over no salary assurance

Makerere University lecturers under their umbrella Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) are devastated after the university failed to pay their salaries for the period the university has been closed.

In a letter to Makerere university academic staff association (MUASA), Makerere administrative staff association (MASA) and Makerere supporting staff association, Prof. Ssentamu stated in acknowledgement of university council’s communication over lack of funds.

“I regret to inform you that after wide consultations, there will be no payment of salary as per the letter from the chairperson of council dated November 25, 2016,” the letter indicated.

On Thursday University council held a meeting to discuss and amend means to land on money to pay the salaries but all in vain.

Prof. Sssentamu said that consultations with ministry of finance yielded nothing but instead advised them to consolidate any available funds to pay staff.

MUASA spokesperson, Dr. Deus Muhwezi said: “This move signifies consistent manipulation and arm twisting by our leaders. We urge council to pay our government salary. Our dispute is meritorious and we should not be treated as if we were terminated at closure.”

President Yoweri Museveni early last month ordered for closure of the university over strikes.
