Monday afternoon’s victory in the women’s 10,000m race was met with thunderous celebrations across Uganda.
In the wake of Uganda’s latest performance in Australia, President Yoweri Museveni took to Twitter to congratulate the winning duo.
“I want to congratulate Stella Chesang for winning Gold in the Women’s 10,000m finals at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. You have done your country proud!” he tweeted.
“I also congratulate Mercyline Chelangat for bagging the Bronze medal in the same competition. Well done,” said the President in another tweet.
Meanwhile, Uganda’s Winnie Nanyondo qualified for the women’s 1500m final.
The 24-year-old was the only Ugandan participant in the Monday early afternoon qualification race.
She finished second in heat two with an automatic qualifying time of 4:08.49 minutes, behind Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech (4:08.29).
