Ziggy Wine: Police parades ASP Butoto, accident victim to clear the air

KAMPALA: The Uganda Police Force has finally cleared the air about claims that the witness in the death of Michael Kalinda commonly known as Ziggy Wine is a police officer.

Since the death of Ziggy Wine on Sunday two theories were formed explaining the cause of his death, the first one was that he was kidnapped, tortured, his two fingers cut, left eye plucked out and burnt.

On Monday, police also confirmed that Ziggy wine was kidnapped, however, promised to investigate into the matter conclusively.

Nevertheless, on Tuesday the force came up with another theory that the People Power pressure group activist died of injuries he sustained after a terrible accident along the Northern bypass highway.

Police Spokesman Fred Enanga explained that on the 21st of July 2019 at around 7:30 pm, a speeding motorcycle Honda type heading in the direction of Kyebando knocked a lady and a gentleman.

He further said that the gentleman who was badly injured (crushed his head on the right-hand side of the motorcycle) neither had identification nor phone with him but he was later identified as Ziggy Wine.

Police went ahead and said that the woman who was knocked with Ziggy wine was identified as Atworo Loy, a 24-year-old and a nursery teacher, who was returning to her home in Mulimira Zone.

When Atworo’s photo emerged on social media, many bloggers and social media users claimed that Police was using their officer (Assistant Superintendent of Police Hellen Butoto Ssezibwa, the regional police spokesperson) to witness as a lady in the story of Ziggy Wine’s death.

Following the outrageous notions on social media, Butoto recorded a video and posted it on her Facebook account informing the public that she is not the one.

“I want to clear my name and the image of the Institute I work for Uganda Police Force that I’m not the one witnessing in that death matter,” she said.

However, the public did not accept her statement. They tasked the Deputy Police spokesperson Polly Namaye to go to the nursery school and parade the two people for the public to see.

Today, the two have been paraded before the media. Although they look alike, Atworo hails from Northern Uganda whereas Butoto is from Bunyoro sub region in Western Uganda.
