KAMPALA: New details emerging from the police is that the Nansana shooting victim identified as Daniel Kyeyune was a son to one of their own and will therefore take charge of the burial as a force.
Daniel was shot dead by suspected Local Defence Unit personnel at Nansana Township Tuesday evening.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman Patrick Onyango confirmed that the deceased was a son of their officer and they have taken charge of burial arrangement.
“True, he was a son of our officer. Details of the burial arrangement are to be communicated in press release very soon,” Mr Onyango said.
Kyeyune’s father is a Special Police Constable, who has worked with police for several years.
Kyeyune, whom People Power pressure group led by Kyaddondo East legislator Robert Kyagulanyi claim to be their member, was shot dead as police, working with Local Defence Unit personnel, were trying to disperse a crowd that had gathered to cheer a convoy of Mr Kyagulanyi.
The incident happened at about 8pm at Masitowa Stage on Kampala-Hoima road
Mr Kyagulanyi and his supporters were returning from Kiboga District for the burial of Ritah Nabukenya, a People Power supporter, who died on Monday in a motor crash.
Nabukenya was allegedly knocked dead in Nakawa, a Kampala suburb, sparking a lot of speculation about circumstances surrounding her death.
However, as police take charge of the burial arrangements of Kyeyune, People Power leaders and supporters will not be allowed to participate as they did during send-off of Nabukenya on Tuesday.
According to eyewitnesses that talked to Dailypost when the convoy reached Nansana, police randomly fired bullets and that was when a young man in jeans and a Uganda Cranes jersey was shot dead near Bank of Africa, opposite Tuskys Supermarket.
The body, soaked in blood, was then picked up by a police patrol vehicle and driven off to City Mortuary for postmortem.
Witnesses said the crowd at the scene pelted police with stones, propelling the officers to fire teargas and bullets to disperse them.
Police in a brief statement on their official social media platforms, said they are still investigating the motive of the shooting.
“Police in Nasana has registered an incident of murder by shooting around Masitowa, Nansana. The motive of the shooting is not yet established. However, the body of the victim has been taken to city mortuary Mulago,” the statement read in part.
In the statement, Police also said one of their officers was injured in a hit and run accident around the same area.
