Only Museveni has the mandate to reopen schools – Nabakooba

Minister for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and National Guidance, Judith Nabakooba has urged the public to ignore reports that are speculating about the reopening of academic institutions.

Nabakooba said that only President Yoweri Museveni has the mandate to reopen schools and all the other institutions that were closed as a measure to combat the spread of the Coronavirus.

She made these remarks on Sunday while briefing the press at the Ministry of ICT offices in Kampala.

“The mandate to guide the nation on the reopening of schools and other institutions is with His Excellency the President of Uganda,”

“When it comes to the national Covid-19 response, I want to call upon Ugandans to be calm and ignore some of the speculative messages regarding the reopening of public institutions,” Nabakooba said.

Last week, there were reports that schools, especially candidate classes are set to reopen for the second term that will end in mid-December, and that third term was to begin in January or February, whereas UNEB exams are to be written in March or April.

The Ministry of Education was the first to dismiss the reports as being untrue and asked parents to disregard the same.

In her press briefing, Nabakooba said that after the National Resistance Movement Parliamentary primaries, President Museveni met with the national Covid-19 taskforce and they briefed him about the progress being made in regards to reopening of schools, places of worship, the airport, and other key sectors.

“The President will very soon come out to address the country about the progress being made but I ask everyone to remain calm as we wait,” Nabakooba added.

Nabakooba urged the public to remain vigilant and observe all Ministry of Health guidelines on Covid-19 amidst rising cases of the virus, especially in Kampala and Wakiso Districts.
