KYANKWANZI: Just over 151,600 people in Butemba Sub County, Butemba Town Council, Kyankwanzi Sub County, Nsambya Sub County, Wattuba Sub County, and Kyankwanzi Town Council (where the National Leadership Institute – NALI – is located), will soon have a more reliable access to safe and clean water upon the completion of a mega project by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC).
Meant to boost water production in the Kyankwanzi Area by constructing a new water supply system, the project will see the construction of a new 3,000,000 litre-per-day Conventional Water Treatment Plant on River Mayanja against the current production capacity of 160,000 litre-per-day. Under this same project, NWSC will construct an in-take on River Mayanja (at Kabale Bridge). Engineers will also lay 17km of DN250mm raw and treated water pumping mains. They will also construct an additional 300,000-litre tank at NALI in Kyankwanzi.
According to Eng Denis Taremwa, the NWSC Project Manager, detailed designs for the new project have already been completed. The corporation has since advertised the construction works tenders, and the submission deadline for bids is March 29.

On February 16, NWSC held a pre-bid meeting in accordance with procurement guidelines. During this, all prospective bidders had the opportunity to visit the project sites and familiarize themselves with the tender requirements and scope of work.
Eng Taremwa ably explained the contents of the tender documents, highlighting some of the salient features in the tender documents, including procurement schedule, bid security amount and validity period, detailed scope of work, joint venture requirements, and foreign currency requirements. Other issues covered included: technical specifications, bills of quantities and drawings, and the criteria to be followed in evaluating the bids. The Project Manager reminded the prospective bidders of the need to attach certificates of completion for previous projects.
With the procurement process expected to be completed in April 2022, NWSC has set May 2022 for the signing of the works contract. Thereafter, construction works will commence in June 2022 and are expected to last 15 months.
