The East African youth Ambassadors’ Platform (EAC-YAP) Uganda Chapter today 20th October 2016 presented a petition to the Speaker of Parliament, the Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga to have exclusive Youth Representation in the forth coming elections of national representatives to the fourth East African Legislative Assembly(EALA).

Speaking on behalf of the EAC-YAP delegates, the Chairperson, Mr James Tayebwa said that the youth who constitute 63% of the population in East Africa are key in cementing and pushing forward the East African Community Integration agenda.

“The mandate of the EAC-YAP is derived from Articles 120(c), 128,129(2) of the Treaty for the establishment of the East African Community to advocate for and voice the interests of youth across the region in the East  African Community integration process”, he said.

Tayebwa said that having youth representatives in EALA will not only enable them espouse their issues in the respective Assemblies but will also contribute to the legislative, oversight and representative mandate, entrench youth interests and participation in the integration process.

Rt. Hon. Kadaga applauded the youth for their efforts in promoting the integration agenda and promised to present the youth’s views to the house for discussion. “I am always impressed when young people actively seek inclusion in decision making at national and regional levels. It shows that you care about Uganda and East Africa at large. This is a big day for the youth,” she said.

The petition if adopted, will enable all the member states of the East African Community to send a youth representative to the East Africa Legislative Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania.

Kadaga also received a Petition from a group of women represented by the Uganda Women’s network (UWONET), on appointment of more women to the management and administrative team of the Independent Electoral Commission.

The Executive Director of Forum for Women in Democracy, Ms. Patricia Munabi Babiiha said that the petition is a voice from all the women in Uganda. She said that about 5000 women have gathered to celebrate the Women’s Week and together they will continue to discuss issues that affect women.

Rt. Hon. Kadaga said that many women are educated and qualified to take on any administrative tasks in Uganda, and including them on management of the Independent   Electoral Commission will further equal representation.
