KAMPALA: Police in Kampala has arrested a woman, Irene Apio Akello, for stabbing to death a man believed to be her lover in Top Five Hotel in Ntinda, Kampala

Kampala Metropolitan Area deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said the incident happened in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

“At around midnight, police received a call from one Joel Kedi, an executive member of LC1 for Village 1 in Ntinda that there was an incident at Top Five hotel and that an identified woman had stubbed a man in hotel room 206 second floor,” Owoyesigyire narrated .

He said police later rushed to the scene to find out what had happened and on arrival, the body of one Alex Otula was found lying in a pool of blood.

“Lying in the pool of blood, the body had multiple knife stab wounds in chest area where all the property in the hotel room was scattered a sign that there was a scuffle before Otula was stabbed,” he said.

He said investigations showed the investigators that the two had first shared food and alcoholic drinks as the leftovers were found on a table in the same hotel room.

“There was signs of scuffles in the room. The properties were scattered,” he said.

Owoyesigyire said further investigation led detectives to a knife which was covered with blood and dumped in a flower vessel near the room’s door.

“Statements were recorded from staff of the hotel who included the acting manager and the caretaker who gave useful leads to investigators,”Owoyesigyire said.

According to Owoyesigyire, information from the staff indicated that they had seen one Irene Apio Akello, 24 at the hotel prompting investigators to follow the lead.

“We mounted an operation and followed her up until she was finally arrested,” he said.

Owoyesigyire said that on arrest, Apio admitted to killing Otula by stabbing him in the chest from behind but that she surprised them when she said she stabbed the victim by accident.

The body was taken to the city mortuary for a postmortem as investigations into the motive of the killer are still ongoing, he said.
