KAMPALA: Former President of Ugandan Law Society (ULS), Senior Counsel Pheona Wall Nabasa has hit back at ULS current president Isaac Ssemakadde refuting allegations that she suppressed the Uganda Law Society elections for the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) representative.
In an open response letter to Ssemakadde Pheona asked for documented fact .
“I would firstly like to respectfully disagree with your assertion that me and my council
suppressed the ULS elections for the JSC representative and ask that you arm yourself with
the well documented facts .” She asserted.
According to Wall, While it is true that the JSC representative position came up
for renewal/ reappointment during her first term of office, it is also true that the holders
of these positions at the time were appointed during a different council regime and had
just completed their first term of office.
“As you are well aware according to the Judicial Service Commission Act, H.E. the President is the ultimate appointing authority of our nominees with the approval of parliament. As
such, the appointing authority in this case opted to reappoint all the serving members of the commission without recourse to ULS as they were eligible for a second term according to the constitution under article 146 (7)(a).” Wrote Wall.
On the allegations of covering up bribery and sexual harassment, wall noted that during her term of office, they launched an anti sexual harassment policy to which various law firms signed up.
“We also held a rule of law symposium on sexual harassment in the legal profession and set up a help desk for young lawyers on the same”. Said Pheona.
She however, advised Ssemakadde to desist from attacking the ULS leadership at that time.
This followed a letter from ULS President Ssemakadde to Pheona denouncing her candidacy to JSC as a representative of ULS.
