NWSC upskills staff in biological wastewater treatment

KAMPALA: The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), in partnership with the IHE-Delft Institute for Water Education, successfully concluded an intensive Hybrid training program aimed at enhancing staff expertise in Biological Wastewater Treatment (BWWT). Over 100 participants, including plant managers, water quality specialists, and regional personnel, completed the program, which ran from October 21st , to November 5th, 2024.

The training sessions, structured as four-hour daily modules, offered a flexible and accessible approach to topics such as sewerage collection systems, advanced treatment processes, and sludge management. The program’s design ensured that participants could balance their professional responsibilities while acquiring vital technical knowledge.

Dr. Rose Christine Kagwa, Senior Director of Business and Scientific Services at NWSC, commended the corporation’s leadership for prioritizing staff development and encouraged participants to translate their newly acquired skills into actionable improvements in NWSC’s wastewater treatment operations. Echoing this sentiment, Eng. Dr. Irene Nansubuga, Director Water Quality and Eng. James Maiteki, the Chief Manager Sewerage Services highlighted the importance of adhering to effluent discharge standards to safeguard environmental health.

The training was coordinated by Ms. Joyce Bakiire, Senior Manager of Training and Capacity Development, who described it as a significant milestone in building NWSC’s capacity to address environmental sustainability challenges.

With such initiatives, NWSC continues to show it’s commitment to equipping its workforce with the skills needed to deliver innovative and sustainable water and wastewater management solutions.
