NWSC enforces crackdown on Kinawataka sewer line encroachment

KAMPALA: In a decisive move to safeguard its infrastructure and public safety, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has initiated a rigorous crackdown on illegal encroachment along the Kinawataka sewer line. This action follows a series of unheeded warnings to residents who have unlawfully settled on land designated for the sewer system.

The NWSC’s efforts to clear its boundaries have been ongoing, marked by previous sensitization meetings and easement payments to the affected communities. Despite these measures, encroachment persisted, leading the corporation to scrutinize the issuance of land titles to these encroachers.

On the morning of June 20th, 2024, a team composed of NWSC’s Sewerage Services and Block Mapping units, National Water security personnel, and the Uganda Police anti-riot squad was deployed to enforce a re-surveying operation. To date, 1.9 km of the 3.2 km sewer line stretch has been surveyed, revealing both permanent and temporary structures erected on or near the sewer line.

Community cooperation has been instrumental to the operation’s progress, with residents actively re-educating their peers who attempted to obstruct the surveying process. NWSC has restated its commitment to protecting its infrastructure from encroachment, thereby ensuring the safety and integrity of both its infrastructure and the surrounding community.
