KAMPALA: In a much-anticipated breakthrough, Namuwongo is set to benefit from a much-needed sewer line intensification project, promising enhanced public health, environmental sustainability, and a significant boost in revenue for the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC). Recently, Chief Manager of Sewerage Services James Maiteki, along with Manager of Pro-Poor Services and Community Collaboration JB Otema and International Hospital Kampala (IHK) Operations Manager John P. Kasooma, conducted an on-ground inspection of the project, a rather significant moment in the project’s progress.

The sewer line extension project which was initially launched in 2014, faced years of delays due to compensation disputes with local landholders. However, persistent negotiations by NWSC eventually broke the impasse, allowing work to resume, and the project now stands closer to completion than ever. “The project will bring the community of Namuwongo cleaner, safer living conditions by alleviating waste related issues, ” Eng. Maiteki noted.

Notably, the benefits of the project extend beyond sanitation. NWSC expects an annual increase in billing by around Ugx200 million, largely driven by high-profile clients like the Ineternational Hospital of Kampala (HK), which stands to gain from the expanded sewer network. This increase in revenue is set to further fund NWSC’s ongoing efforts to improve water and sanitation services across Uganda.

Work on the network has already seen the laying of critical pipelines in previously contested areas, establishing the groundwork for a fully functional sewer network expected to be operational within the next two months. Community members, many of whom have long coped with inadequate waste management systems, can look forward to improved infrastructure that promises a healthier environment and greater convenience.
