Millions lost as fire razes Minister Muyingo’s school in Mukono

Property worth Shs800m destroyed in Mukono school fire, students sent home.

MUKONO: Property worth Shs800 million were Thursday destroyed in a dormitory fire at Forest Hill College Mukono in central Uganda, authorities have said.
Police are investigating the cause of the fire that gutted the boys’ dormitory housing at least 225 students of senior three to senior six.
Authorities say no one was hurt by the fire that destroyed students’ mattresses, books, jerrycans, clothes and money, among others.

According to the school head teacher Ms Jane Were, the fire broke out at about 2pm as all students were in the field for music practice.
“It was raining and everybody was in the field. I received a phone call from one of my staff and then we rushed back and saw fire at the dormitory,” Ms Were said told this reporter.

Ms Were said parents had been contacted to pick their children from school as they plan their next move.
One of the affected students, Louis Kainamura, said he lost everything including books, in the fire.

“I was busy doing music practice when the head teacher announced that our dormitory was on fire,” he said.
He said he has nowhere to start from and yet he is in a candidate class.
The officer in charge of fire fighting at Mukono Police station, Conrad Byomugabe said it was too late by the time they arrived to put out the fire.
The Minister for higher education JC Muyingo who was at the scene did not comment on the fire. Muyingo’s owned Seeta High Colleges acquired Forest Hill College management few years ago.
