Democratic Party President Norbert Mao today petitioned Speaker Rebecca Kadaga to block the nomination of seven new commissioners of the Electoral Commission.
Mao stormed Parliament and submitted a strongly-worded petition to the Speaker and the Leader of Opposition(LoP) Winnie Kizza. The Leader of Opposition is also a member of the Appointments Committee that will convene early next month to look through the nominated commissioners.
“The President’s recent action of acting unilaterally (albeit within existing laws) to appoint a new EC, if not reviewed, will undermine the spirit of IPOD irreparably. I am sure if you engage with him, he will agree that appointing the EC needs consensus on legal reforms,” reads the petition.
George Piwang, one of the nominated commissioners, will answer questions in the committee regarding the forgery of a document in the run-up to the 2011 elections.
Hajati Aisha Lubega, the nominated Vice Chairperson of the Electoral Commission(EC),will answer inquiries regarding the position of her husband Waswa Lubega who is the Chairman of the Education Service Commission(HSC).
