Kampala’s Free WiFi Starts tomorrow Saturday

Are you an internet addict? Then the best place to live in is Kampala! By Saturday, 1 October, city dwellers will start enjoying free internet access.

This has been revealed by the Minister of Information, ICT and Communication, Frank Tumwebaze. While addressing the press Friday at the media center, Tumwebaze said his Ministry will be providing free Wi-Fi services within Kampala.

However, this will be limited to between 6pm and 6 am on weekdays, and at the weekends.

“Wi-Fi will be free from Saturday (tomorrow) 3pm through to Monday 6 am. Internet access is no longer a luxury but a necessity for all Ugandan citizens. The ICT sector must remain at the centre of this countrywide transformation, and steering Uganda to world class efficiency and productivity,” he said.

Tumwebaze added that the provision of free internet had been made possible by the reduction in internet costs.

He said Internet costs had reduced from USD1200 to USD 300 per megabit per second per month in 2010 and 2016 respectively.

Meanwhile, the internet will be restricted to downloading videos, and access to “bad site”.
