JINJA: The group stages for this year’s Copa Coca Cola schools football championship will come to an end today at the different venues in Jinja Municipality.
A number of matches in group stages are right now ongoing as the schools await who progresses to the round of 16.
The final day of play in group stages comes after a busy week of football action where all the 59 schools have at least played six games each.
Yesterday Mbarara High mercilessly beat Ngora High 12-0 in arguably the biggest score-line at the tournament so far.
Schools’ soccer giants St Mary’s Kitende beat Pallisa’s Hill View Bulangira 6-1 with left winger Abdul Karim Watambala and Umar Kyebatala each scoring a brace at the Kakindu Stadium.
SC Villa’s striker Charles Lwanga aka Neymar and Dennis Ojara scored other goals for St Mary’s Kitende.
St Mary’s Kitende right back Emmanuel Munoobi scored in his own net to give a consolation goal to Hill View Bulangira.
Loro S.S came from behind to beat Mbale Progressive 2-1 in a tight-marked game.
Ambrose Owani scored a brace for Loro after Mbale Progressive had benefited from Abdul Wesonga’s penalty.
In some of the other Sunday matches played over slippery grounds after the mid-morning rains, Standard High School – Zana smiled 3-0 over Musedde Memorial at the Jinja College 1 play-ground.
Wakiso’s Kawempe Royal beat Kitara Model 4-2 while Paidha SS bet Mandela SS 2-1.
Meanwhile, the match between Jinja Progressive Academy (JIPRA) and Kapchorwa Standard ended prematurely with JIPRA leading 4-0 after only 13 minutes of play.
Kapchorwa Standard surprised soccer fans as they started the game fielding only seven players. The game would later be halted after one of their players got a slight injury.
The round of 16 draws will be held at Jinja College where the secretariat is found.
